Hiring an App Team in Istanbul
Istanbul has product engineers, designers, and people who have shipped to the App Store. Hiring there is still a diligence process. You are buying a team you can reach, a contract you can enforce, and a repo you will own. The city is the location. It is not the credential.
When you hire an app team in Istanbul, check the legal entity, timezone overlap, who owns Apple accounts, and who stays after launch. A city name is not a diligence process.
What should you confirm about the company?
Ask which legal entity will sign. Croncode’s public structure is simple: Croncode LLC is a United States company in Albuquerque. Engineering and design sit in Istanbul. Cron Creative Studio is the Istanbul studio name. That is not the same company as croncodetech.com. We spell that out in Croncode LLC’s official identity.
If a vendor cannot name the signer, the invoice, and the jurisdiction, you are talking to a network, not a studio. Compare models in studio vs freelancer vs agency.
How do you check the people, not the slide?
Ask who will be in the weekly demo. Then ask who will be in the demo after version one. A lean studio will give you names. Ours are public: Goktug Unver, Yusufhan Sokur, and Ozgur Ismet Ozkan. Do not invent biographies for people who keep a short public profile. LinkedIn is enough until they add more.
- Name the iOS engineer on the first increment.
- Name the designer who owns empty and error states.
- Name the person who submits the binary.
If those three roles collapse into one person, that can work. Write it down so you are not surprised when vacation happens. Resource splitting is described in small team, multiple products.
Which operational checks are Istanbul-specific?
| Check | Why it matters | Fail signal |
|---|---|---|
| Overlap hours | Review and store questions need same-day answers | Only async screenshots |
| English and Turkish | Many products ship both | “We will translate later” |
| Payment and contract | You need a paper trail | Personal accounts only |
| Device lab | iOS is not one screen | One phone, one OS |
Localization is not a nice extra if your buyers are in Turkey and abroad. Put it in the first contract. See scalability and localization.
When is a local team the wrong fit?
If you need a 40-person staff-augmentation bench next month, a lean studio is the wrong object. If you need one product team that also ships its own App Store apps, it can be the right one. Our consumer evidence is YourStyle, Numira, Spylie, and Luviport.
Selection criteria for iOS vendors in general live in how to choose a custom iOS studio. This page is the Istanbul-specific checklist on top of that.
What mistakes appear after the first invoice?
- Assuming timezone is culture: overlap is a calendar setting. Ask for it.
- Leaving Apple accounts in a personal ID: you will pay later.
- No quote packet: use what to send for a quote.
- Confusing the studio with a tourist pitch: you are hiring software, not a city tour.
More writing: Journal. How we ship from this city: how Croncode ships AI consumer apps from Istanbul.
Ask for a weekday overlap that survives daylight-saving changes. Write it as a clock, not as “we are flexible.” Flexible without a slot becomes night Slack and missed review replies. Then ask how they test on a small iPhone and a current iPad if your job needs it. One flagship device is not a lab. If the team also ships its own apps, ask which store update landed last and who submitted it. Live products are diligence. See what Croncode builds.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to fly to Istanbul to hire a team?
No. You need a contract, a repo, and a demo cadence. A visit helps if the project is large. It is not a substitute for ownership of accounts.
Is English enough for the working language?
Agree it in writing. Many teams work in Turkish internally and English in tickets. Mixed tickets create missed review notes.
What timezone should I expect?
Europe/Istanbul. If your stakeholders are in the US, book a standing overlap hour. Do not hope that late Slack will replace it.
Are Istanbul rates the reason to hire?
Rate is a factor. Continuity and store ownership are larger. A cheap team that keeps your bundle ID is expensive.
