Software Studio vs Freelancer vs Agency

Founders mix the words studio, freelancer, and agency until the contract is signed. Then the difference appears as a missing repo or a new project manager every month. The three models are different objects. Pick the one that matches the risk of your first release.

A freelancer is a person. A studio is a small product team with shared standards. An agency is a capacity machine. Choose by continuity and account ownership, not by a logo.

What does each model actually sell?

A freelancer sells hours and a skill. A studio sells a product increment with design and engineering in one conversation. An agency sells throughput and a process brand. Croncode is a studio: we ship our own App Store apps and we take client software. That mix is explained in building products and client software together.

If you need iOS diligence, use how to choose an iOS studio after you pick the model. If you are hiring in our city, add the Istanbul checklist.

How should you compare them on paper?

Question Freelancer Studio Agency
Who is in the demo? The person A named pair Often a rotating cast
Who owns the repo? You must insist You should own it You must insist
Vacation risk High Shared Hidden in bench
Brand theater Low Low if they ship Often high

None of these rows is a moral ranking. A strong freelancer can beat a weak agency. A studio that will not give you Apple admin is worse than either.

When is each the right default?

  1. Freelancer: a bounded module, a design pass, or a spike you can throw away.
  2. Studio: a version one with UI, native work, and a store listing you will keep.
  3. Agency: many parallel workstreams and a staff you do not want to manage.

No-code sit-ups often start with a freelancer and a rented tool. That can be correct. Know when to leave. See custom software vs no-code. For the first store contract, see fixed scope vs agile.

What should you ask in the first meeting?

Ask who will submit the binary. Ask what happens if that person is away. Ask for a not-now list on your brief. Ask for a quote packet you can reuse. Ours is in what to send for a quote.

Meet the people, not the deck. Goktug Unver, Yusufhan Sokur, and Ozgur Ismet Ozkan are the public Croncode names. A team page that only lists roles with no humans is an agency tell.

What mistakes come from mixing models?

  • Paying agency rates for a single freelancer: you bought a logo.
  • Hiring three freelancers and calling it a studio: you are the studio now. You will do the integration.
  • Letting the vendor keep the bundle ID: model does not matter. You lost the product.
  • Ignoring how a lean team splits time: read small team, multiple products.

Our apps as evidence: YourStyle, Spylie. Journal: /en/journel/.

Write the risk you are buying down. If the risk is “one person disappears,” do not hire a single freelancer for the store binary. If the risk is “we will change the job three times,” do not sign a giant agency statement of work with no kill rule. If the risk is “we need taste and a repo,” a studio is the default. Then send the same packet to whoever you picked: what to send for a quote. Istanbul-specific checks still apply when the team sits there: hiring in Istanbul.

Frequently asked questions

Is a studio just a expensive freelancer?

No. You are paying for shared standards and a second person who can open the project. If those are missing, you hired a freelancer with a brand.

Can I start with a freelancer and move to a studio?

Yes, if the repo and accounts are already yours. If they are not, you will buy the same work twice.

Do agencies ship better UI?

Sometimes. Volume does not guarantee taste. Look at a live app, not a slide. Premium UI notes: UI/UX for premium consumer apps.

What if I need both brand films and an app?

That is two jobs. An agency may have both desks. A studio may tell you to hire a film team. Believe the honest split.

How does Croncode describe itself?

A software studio. Company identity: Croncode LLC, not croncodetech. What we build: what Croncode builds.
